Clinical Significance: The Direct Coombs Test (DAT) detects antibodies or complement proteins bound directly to the surface of circulating red blood cells, diagnosing autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
Why It's Done:
Detect antibodies bound to RBCs causing premature red cell destruction
Investigate autoimmune hemolytic anemia and immune-mediated blood disorders
Evaluate hemolytic disease of the newborn (erythroblastosis fetalis)
Assess delayed or acute transfusion-related hemolytic events
