Sugar Runs High Long Before You Feel It

Blood sugar can sit above normal for years without producing a single symptom, quietly affecting blood vessels, nerves and kidneys the whole time. Prediabetes, the stage before the real thing, frequently reverses with nothing more than diet and walking.

HbA1c is the number worth knowing. It reflects two to three months of control, so it can't be gamed by eating carefully for two days before the test. A fasting reading tells you about this morning. HbA1c tells you about your last season.

Before You Book

Sample: Blood and Urine. Preparation: Fast for 8 to 12 hours before your sample. Water is fine, and keep taking any regular medication unless your doctor says otherwise.

Tell the collection team everything you're taking, prescription or not. Plenty of supplements move these numbers, and without that context your report reads wrong.

Reading Your Report

Expect a value or two to sit slightly outside the range. That's normal and usually means nothing on its own. What matters is which one, by how much, and whether it's moving compared with last time.

These tests point at a diagnosis. They don't make one. Read your report with a doctor who knows your history and what you're currently taking.
