What is a Osmotic (RBC) Fragility Test ?
Clinical Significance: The Osmotic Fragility Test measures red blood cell resistance to hemolysis under decreasing saline concentrations, diagnosing hereditary spherocytosis and erythrocyte membrane fragility.
Why It's Done:
- Evaluate structural integrity and surface-area-to-volume ratio of red blood cells
- Confirm spherocytic RBC hemolysis at higher saline concentrations than normal cells
- Differentiate hereditary spherocytosis from autoimmune hemolytic conditions
- Guide decisions regarding splenectomy in chronic hemolytic patients
