What is a Hb Electrophoresis- HPLC ?
Clinical Significance: The Hb Electrophoresis by HPLC test identifies and quantifies hemoglobin variants (HbA, HbA2, HbF, HbS, HbC) to screen for and diagnose thalassemia traits and sickle cell disease.
Why It's Done:
- Precisely quantify HbA2 levels to confirm Beta-Thalassemia trait (>3.5%)
- Detect elevated HbF in hereditary persistence of fetal hemoglobin or thalassemia
- Confirm or rule out Sickle Cell Trait / Disease via automated cation-exchange HPLC
- Prevent catastrophic inherited hemoglobin disorders through early carrier identification
